Many technologies have been Designed to communicate over long distances.
[CER] DISCUSSION QUESTION:
How does communicating over long distances help people? Make a claim then gather evidence to support and justify your claim throughout this lesson. |
/ Ii / INvestigate
1. Secret Code - work as a cryptographer to design a secret code for use in transmitting classified information.
2. Chinese Whispers - play the classic game of telephone to see if the message gets across. 3. Telephone - investigate how effective sound travels through a string. 4. Developing A Warning System - use light and sound to design a solution to protect students from forest fires. 5. Drummer boy - use drums to send coded information through sound waves. |
/ Iii / Level Up!
During this lesson you will learn more about how instruments transmit and detect waves to extend human senses including:
- People use their senses to learn about the world around them.
- Their eyes detect light, their ears detect sound, and they can feel vibrations by touch.
- People also use a variety of devices to communicate (send and receive information) over long distances.

Before modern technology people used various methods to communicate over long distances including smoke signals, drums, fire beacons, heliographs, and even carrier pigeons. Accurately explain why communicating over long distances has and continues to be so important to people. |

Heliographs use sunlight and mirrors to transmit messages over long distances. One of the most famous uses of the heliograph was during the British expedition to rescue General Charles Gordon in Khartoum, Sudan, in 1885 where heliograph stations were set up along the Nile River to relay messages over hundreds of miles of desert terrain. Draw and explain how you could use light and some everyday materials to send a distress signal if you were ever in an emergency. |

Throughout history, drums have played a crucial role in battlefield communication. From ancient times to modern warfare, drums have been used to convey commands, coordinate troop movements, and boost morale on the battlefield. In ancient civilizations such as ancient China, Egypt, and Greece, drums were employed as a means of signaling commands and coordinating military maneuvers. The rhythmic beats of the drums could be heard over long distances, providing a reliable method of communication amidst the chaos of battle.
During the Middle Ages, drums continued to be utilized on the battlefield, particularly in Europe. Drummers, often positioned at the forefront of armies, would signal commands such as advance, retreat, or change formation through specific drum patterns. This helped commanders maintain control over their forces and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.
|
In more recent history, drums remained an integral part of military communication, especially during the American Civil War and World Wars I and II. Drummers were replaced by buglers and other signaling devices, but drums still found their place in conveying messages and maintaining discipline among troops.
Today, while modern technology has largely replaced traditional forms of battlefield communication, drums continue to hold symbolic significance in military ceremonies and rituals. However, their historical role in conveying commands and coordinating troops stands as a testament to their enduring importance in warfare.
