Do identical twins grow and develop the same?
Identical twin astronauts, Scott and Mark Kelly, are subjects of NASA's Twins Study. Scott spent a year in space while Mark stayed on Earth as a control subject. Researchers looked at the effects of space travel on the human body and what they found was amazing!
Can you guess which one is Scott?

[CER] AGREE or DISAGREE? The environment has a greater impact on the growth and development of organisms than genetics.

/ Ii / Level Up!
During this lesson you will learn more about how organisms grow and develop.
✎Notes:
- Organisms reproduce, either sexually or asexually, and transfer their genetic information to their offspring.
- Animals engage in characteristic behaviors that increase the odds of reproduction.
- Plants reproduce in a variety of ways, sometimes depending on animal behavior and specialized features (such as attractively colored flowers) for reproduction.
- Plant growth can continue throughout the plant’s life through production of plant matter in photosynthesis.
- Genetic factors as well as local conditions affect the size of the adult plant.
- The growth of an animal is controlled by genetic factors, food intake, and interactions with other organisms, and each species has a typical adult size range.

/ v / Knowledge CheckCoastal redwoods are some of the largest, most impressive trees in the world. Given proper food, light, space, and water, they grow gigantic. Redwoods tower over the other trees with most growing taller than a 30-story skyscraper! Their trunks can grow more than 27-feet wide, large enough to create a tunnel for a car to drive through. They are also long-lived, some lasting for more than 2,000 years. The needles on their long heavy branches absorb moisture from fog and rainwater or drip it down to the underbrush below.

Now, imagine growing an adult redwood in a pot that fits on a coffee table! This is what bonsai gardeners have succeeded in doing. Bonsai is an ancient horticultural art form originating in China around 206 BC. It involves special gardening techniques that including trimming the tree's roots and branches, plucking leaves and needles, and planting the young tree in a shallow pot with sides that may only be inches high. With precise cultivation, the gardeners are able to stunt the growth of a mighty redwood.
